The furore surrounding Christian Horner and Red Bull continues to rise as Formula One drivers held their press conferences ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Today (Thursday) will see those stars practice in Jeddah as they attempt to usurp Max Verstappen after he won the first race of the season.
Team principal Horner was accused of inappropriate behaviour that has since been cleared in a lengthy Red Bull investigation, but controversy has continued after Verstappen’s father Jos called for the 50-year-old to be sacked.
Leading F1 figures were called to comment on the situation, including Lewis Hamilton, as Verstappen has been linked with his seat at Mercedes.
Jos Verstappen met with Silver Arrows chief Toto Wolff at the Bahrain GP and the three-time world champion has stood by his father, though Horner has also received backing from Sergio Perez as controversy rumbles on into the second race of the season.
Pole-sitter Max Verstappen is confident of another strong race tomorrow as the Red Bull man chases a ninth successive win.
He said: “As we have seen in the past, there have been a lot of crazy races around here. A lot can happen.
“Normally people say ‘it’s an easy one-stop, easy to the line’. But It’s not like that around here. A lot of straight as well.
“But I’m confident with the race pace we have that the car will work really well.”
He added after qualifying: “It was a very good day. We improved the car a little bit overnight and that gave me a bit more confidence to attack the high-speed corners.
“Around here it depends a lot on your confidence level and how much you can go to the limit. Throughout qualifying, it was pretty crazy how fast you go around here.
“I had a lot of fun and the car behaved very well.”
