Devils Nico Hischier changes jersey number mid-game after getting badly cut at World Championship As the number of NHL teams participating in the Stanley Cup Playoffs dwindles, many NHL players have decided to continue playing by flying across the Atlantic to compete in the IIHF World Championship.
The tournament is held every year — this year in the Czech Republic — and you’ll see a group of players whose NHL clubs either failed to qualify for the playoffs or were eliminated early in the tournament.
One of those players is New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier, who I can only assume will be scheduled for the playoffs early this season (I know I was), but Alas, that didn’t happen, so he jumped ship to the Czech Republic to represent his native Switzerland in the tournament.
The Swiss faced the hosts on Monday and Hischier found himself involved in a nasty collision after rolling violently towards the net.
As Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis noted in this tweet, Hischier narrowly avoided being hit in the face by a skate blade.
However, he did not escape injury and suffered a cut on his cheek that caused blood to flow all over the Swiss team’s sweater.

Hischier healed himself and touched the bandage again, but changed wardrobe before returning.

I guess the Swiss team couldn’t do it, but anyway, they had a big 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the penalty shootout.
Switzerland’s next group match is against England on Wednesday.
In recent years, Switzerland has become a notable team in the international arena.
